On 5 January 1911, during Captain Robert Falcon Scott’s Terra Nova Expedition, official photographer Herbert George Ponting discovered a natural ice grotto in a grounded iceberg near Cape Evans. He persuaded two of the expedition’s scientists — T. Griffith Taylor and Charles S. Wright — to stand at the entrance so the immense scale of the cave could be understood. In the distance, the expedition ship Terra Nova sits quietly on the frozen sea.
This extraordinary image captures the otherworldly beauty of the polar landscape: towering walls of translucent blue ice, long icicles hanging like crystal curtains, and the vast white expanse beyond.
I have carefully colorized the original black-and-white photograph, restoring the deep sapphire blues of the ice, the crisp whites of the snow, and the subtle tones of the explorers’ clothing while remaining faithful to the historical record.
